Is a Boudoir Session Worth it?

Is a Boudoir Session Worth it? While this question is subjective, as a boudoir photographer and a client, I feel boudoir sessions are incredibly worth the cost, time and prep that goes into them. The short answer? Duh.

Boudoir sessions can be scary for multiple reasons; not only are you getting half-naked in front of a stranger, but you’re also investing a ton of time and money. Of course, people begin to wonder, is a boudoir shoot worth it? Whether or not a boudoir session is worth the investment is a pretty subjective question, but I’m going to dive into why I think it’s worth the investment both as the photographer and the client.

First, I feel it’s key to keep in mind that whether or not a boudoir session is worth it depends entirely on the experience you have. One person can say it isn’t worth it because they had a poor experience, while someone else can say it was the best experience they’ve ever had, so it was absolutely worth it. Your experience is entirely up to you. Choosing a boudoir photographer is no easy task, and you must do the work and the research to find the right photographer for you. It’s also crucial you go into this with an open and positive mind. Going into a session asking, “is it worth it” can leave you feeling hesitant and, therefore, not relaxing enough to get the best experience.

Let’s talk about the emotional aspect of things.

Why do a boudoir shoot in the first place? Often, people choose to do a boudoir session as a way to celebrate their bodies. We live in a society that places our worth solely on our looks, then we’re told we’re not good enough, and to start working towards the next unrealistic standard. Fortunately, I feel we’re shifting into a new trend where we’re taking our worth back and placing it within ourselves rather than living to meet the next unrealistic expectation. Boudoir photography is an incredible way to take your worth back and place it within yourself. I know you’re probably thinking, “but aren’t these photos to show off our bodies?”. Well, yes, but not in that context. What’s even more important than the images you receive from these sessions is the experience and how you feel afterward. We learned to cover up, stay decent, and live unexposed, and these images are a way to break that barrier and show up vulnerable and afraid and say a big fuck you to the society that constantly knocks us down anyway. We feel empowered by these sessions. Our confidence goes through the roof. We learn to love ourselves and every inch of our ever-changing body regardless of what society says. And it’s incredibly liberating.

As a photographer, I can’t begin to tell you how incredible it is to physically see the confidence and power these sessions bring to my clients. I watch them walk in with hesitancy, scared eyes, and worry, and I watch them leave giddy, with huge smiles on their faces and increased self-esteem. It never fails. I get clients all the time telling me it was the best experience of their life or the best day ever, and they cannot wait to do it again. Even my clients who book a session solely as a gift for their partners end up telling me that the session turned out to be more for them. Sure, the photos are great, but the experience and the way clients feel far outweigh the benefit of the images.

As a client, I can still feel the effects today from my very first boudoir session two whole years ago. I felt empowered before I even saw my images. I gained a lot of weight in my adult years (as most adults usually do) and felt pretty low about myself. This boudoir session helped me see that yes, I am a beautiful human, but my looks are the least interesting thing about me; I’m also an incredible human on the inside. I have lived a life full of unique experiences, I’ve touched the lives of many, I’ve accomplished many goals, made tons of friends, made people laugh, made people happy cry, shared intimate moments with those who matter most, and lived a whole life that can’t be summed up based on my looks. It helped me realize that I am human, and I am more than just a body. This session was the next stepping stone on my journey to self-love and overall happiness.

Sure, a boudoir shoot LOOKS like it’s just risqué photos in lingerie, but it’s so much more than that. It’s an experience for us to feel empowered, strong, brave, sexy, beautiful and more than just a body. A boudoir session is a powerful way for people to take their power back, feel confident in themselves, love, and appreciate their bodies a little bit more. It’s an incredible experience, and I suggest everyone try it out at least once.

Let’s also talk about the session itself.

While the experience is incredible, there’s more to the session than that. Photographers range in price from a couple of hundred dollars to thousands. Photography is one of those things where you get what you pay for. Typically, the higher priced the photographer, the better quality of products and experience.

With most professional boudoir photographers, you’ll receive digital images, albums, and wall art (sometimes more!). On top of the products, you’re also receiving incredible customer service, pampering from head to toe, a chance to get out of your house and do something for yourself, a break from reality, and compliments from left and right! It makes a person feel incredibly, doing one of these sessions!

So, is a boudoir session worth it? I sure think so, but you’ll have to try it for yourself to figure it out on your own. If you pick the right photographer, I promise you won’t regret it. Every person’s experience is unique, so it’s up to you to create the perfect experience by finding a photographer you vibe with most.
